The dark art of creating a luxury surfboard

Yesterday we laminated the transverse  middle layer of paulownia. This morning the bricks were removed and we can see the hull concave emerging.  When making a luxury surfboard there are no shortcuts. Every detail is worked out beforehand. In the post modern trend to hearken back to the style, expansive comfort and recreation luxury of 20's and 30's, the labour required to make one of these vessels disregards time. Bricks might seem laborious and old fashioned. Who would bother? But therein lie the dark arts of creating a luxury surfboard.

We are entering a new paradigm which transcends self expression through a selfless pure direct experience. A Zen meditation.

The unique advantages of using bricks for weights include the variable pressure which torture the concave into the bottom

This video also shows the drilling of pilot holes for vents which need to be open when applying resin to the board during finishing. The fourth layer is placed and bricked down...

Do you feel like building a wooden surfboard yourself ?
