3d printed fins for Surfboards

Roy Stuart surfboards are diversifying into EPS foam based mid length boards. The first of the new boards is the 8ft 'Planet Venus' singlefin, which keeps the distinctive parallel profile and constant rail section of the original wooden boards.

Planet Venus 8 will have a standard fin box, wood is not ideal for fin box tabs so we have developed a 3d printed polycarbonate version the 'Warp Drive' fSpitfire cutaway fin in used in the 10'6" Earl, scaled down from 10" to 8" for the smaller board. The new fin is ultra light with a cross hatched hollow core, and will be available in three sizes: 7",  7.5" and 8".     Warp Drive single fin with BLEF foil

Single finned surfboards have suffered historically from lack of fin power and hold. In short they've been under finned, which means that the rider often has to 'nurse' them through turns as the fins are frequently operating in an inefficient pre stall zone where lift and control declines. By replacing the weak traditional 'dolphin' type single fin with a  wider based 'Warp Drive'  BLEF ellipse based Spitfire foil the single finned board is transformed. The Spitfire plan shape packs more lift area into a compact shape, which not only delivers more power but also improves the Reynolds number via the longer chord, so that the fin gives great acceleration right from the take off zone at lower speeds, with a smooth power band right to the top end, all with effortless control.

BLEF foils allow the fin to gain 30 to 40 percent in angle of attack capability, while also eliminating the typically sudden onset of stall and maintaining high lift and drive even at extreme angles of attack. In addition they deliver a significant drag reduction. The result is not a subtle improvement but rather a radical increase in power, turning ability, smoothness, control, and holding tenacity.

The fin is suitable for any short to mid length single fin 2+1 setup or longboard.

The Warp Drive Spitfire cutaway will also be available soon in hollow cored laser sintered titanium in sizes up to 10.5". The titanium line will be also used in Roy Stuart wooden surfboards.
